Utah House Democratic Caucus Expresses Concern on SB 224 Energy Independence Amendments

“SB 224 Energy Independence Amendments is concerning for Utah’s energy future, as it incentivizes Rocky Mountain Power to maintain coal plants within the state, shifting financial risk to ratepayers without adequate oversight. This perpetuates reliance on non-renewable energy sources and hinders efforts to transition to cleaner alternatives. Moreover, the bill departs from established regulatory practices by exempting coal plants from Public Service Commission oversight, shifting the burden of proof from the utility to ratepayers, and removing incentives against mismanagement. SB 224 jeopardizes the affordability and sustainability of Utah’s energy landscape by asking ratepayers to shoulder the risks associated with aging and polluting facilities without proper justification, access to meaningful information, or jurisdiction for oversight.”
